Group Classes

Learning an instrument can be more fun with friends or family in a small group setting. Class topics range from beginning ukulele to more advanced ukulele strumming and fingerstyle techniques, solo playing, as well as learning to read standard notation and understanding music theory. These are the group classes that are currently offered at the Davidson Ukulele Studio.

This gently paced group course introduces the basics of ukulele playing techniques, including proper hand and body position, note reading, basic chords, fingerpicking and strumming techniques. This is a great class if you are new to ukulele or feel you need to spend some time to slow down to review or reinforce the basics of your ukulele playing.

Beginners Mind Ukulele

This is a short three-week course that introduces basic strumming patterns and techniques. If you feel like your strumming is a little dull and needs a lift, this is a great class that will show you ways to make your strumming more interesting - and exciting - as well as help you understand what is going on when you are trying to strum some of your favorite songs.

Basic Music Theory For Ukulele

This three-week short course is a fun and approachable introduction to music theory that will give you the inside scoop on how ukulele chords and melodies work. It can also make playing the ukulele easier because you will have context that puts the "why" behind the "how" you do things on the ukulele. Best of all, you will gain a deeper understanding of all kinds of music and the magic behind it!

This three-week short course is an introduction to the beautiful sounds of fingerstyle playing on the ukulele. You will learn basic four-finger string plucking techniques and patterns that you can use for accompanying your favorite songs or apply to solo playing.

Basic Fingerpicking

This is a biweekly “meetup” style group that gets together to sing and strum our favorite songs. These are fun and informal sessions where participants work on one or two songs - reviewing chords and strumming patterns and then break down a song to fit the words with the strums. We play songs out of Jim and Liz Beloff’s The Daily Ukulele book and other resources. Enrollment is open and the group meets every other week. Check our Facebook page for current scheduling.

Strumming Club

This is a biweekly group meeting that alternates with the Strumming Club. The meeting format is similar except that the group focus is on exploring the many beautiful fingerstyle arrangements that are available for ukulele. A diversity of music genres will be covered, including Hawaiian Slack-key songs, Appalachian folk songs, Celtic traditional melodies, Classical and Contemporary Music fingerstyle arrangements. We will be using books and other resources to play from - please check our Facebook page or contact Nancy for more information.
